Welcome to the Doberman Diversity Project! If you are searching for a Doberman puppy bred with an eye towards health and from a breeder interested in promoting research to improve our breed's health and longevity, welcome!
There is no known line of Dobermans free of genetic health problems. Buying a puppy from a participating breeder doesn't change that. We hope that breeding for diversity will make a difference and that puppies from participating breeders will enjoy improved genetic diversity, genetic health and longevity (and there is good science to support that notion), but we the truth is that nobody yet knows if that's true. The Doberman Diversity project is, in short, a real-world citizen-science experiment aiming to improve the genetic health and longevity of our breed. Because this is a research project, buyers must understand that puppies from participating breeders are not guaranteed to be healthier or longer lived than puppies from breeders who are not participating with this research project. A puppy from a participating breeder could die early and suffer genetic disease, like every other Doberman puppy. It's important to us that buyers know this. It's also important that buyers know that by working with the Diversity Project, that they are part of a long-term experiment and that, at a minimum, their puppy's DNA (and that of the puppies parents) will support research looking for answers to the genetic diseases and early death from which most Dobermans suffer.
